It never occurred to them to wonder how it looked to outsiders.

Most people within the military were too afraid of Riza to say anything – at least not within her earshot.

Scieszka and Winry had long ago adjusted to the fact that people around them were uncomfortable with the idea of two girls together. But most of the people who know them loved them too much to say anything.

Ed had been confused. He’d not seemed able to understand the idea. “But – you’re both girls.”

Al had become aggravated. “We have to go, niisan. I’ll explain it on the train.”

They would never wonder about the words that people used when they were out earshot. They would never think about the fact that once Riza had become openly involved it had gone from being “sweet” to being “distasteful” and “disgusting”.

It would never occur to them that people saw them as something scandalous; that they were no longer people with feelings and simply something to be gossiped about.

Riza refused to let them wander the streets of Central City alone.

Scieszka said that was ridiculous because she had been in Central City alone dozens of times.

Winry just sulked and glared.

Riza pointed out Barry the Chopper. She pointed out that she and the Colonel had made enemies over the years. Enemies who would think nothing of going after Winry and Scieszka to get to Riza.

Then she reminded them that the last time they had gone out alone, they had come back with something that had turned out to be a highly toxic drug.

Scieszka was always thinking about something she had read in some book. Winry was easily distracted. They ended up paying too much for food; they almost stepped out into oncoming traffic.

Riza said she lived in terror until they came back through the door.
